Caramel Cake

Recipe is from the New England Cook Book circa 1936

2 C flour
2 tbs cocoa
2 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
2 eggs, well beaten
1.5 C sugar
½ C butter or other shortening
1 C milk
1 tsp vanilla

Cream the butter and sugar thoroughly and add the eggs. Sift the flour and mix with the dry ingredients. Sift again. Add the dry mixture and the milk alternately to the cream, butter and sugar, and beat thoroughly. Flavor with the vanilla. Bake in layer cake tins in a moderate oven (340°) for one hour.
